The 2024 Homer Alaska Nutcracker Ballet will launch the town's holiday festivities on December 7, 8, 11, 13, and 14 at the Homer High School Mariner Theatre.
Now in its 36th year, this cherished production has become more than a performance. It's a beloved community gathering, an exploration of artistic expression, and a chance for everyone involved to create memories year after year.
Each performance transforms the Mariner Theater into a realm of timeless enchantment, filled with Tchaikovsky's iconic music and dazzling costumes. From the intricate scene drops above the stage to the "tomb" of costumes worn by generations of performers, every detail tells a story.
Standing backstage among the props, gazing at the rows of handmade costumes and scene drops, is like peering into the rich history of the Homer Nutcracker and the community's unwavering support.
Building the Magic in Homer Alaska
The magic of the Nutcracker doesn't happen only on stage. In the weeks leading up to the performance, the theater hums with anticipation. Forty or so children gather for warmups, their energy filling the space, while behind them, parents, costume designers, and theater volunteers work tirelessly to prepare.
The stage is filled with iconic props, like the towering Christmas tree adorned with gingerbread ornaments, glittery glass balls, and stacks of giant presents in Clara's parlor. For those working behind the scenes, each element brings back memories of past productions and the careful work of countless volunteers.
Backstage is like stepping into a different world, where time operates by a different rhythm. Watching the dancers rehearse their parts over and over, from the gypsies and wind-up dolls to the mermaids and phoenixes, creates a kind of backstage symphony that's both chaotic and heartwarming.
Between the bustling activity and the camaraderie of parents and children alike, the Homer Alaska Nutcracker is an experience like no other.
The Nutcracker Costume Tomb
One of the most beloved aspects of Homer's Nutcracker production is the dedication to costumes. Up a narrow set of plywood stairs from the theater's tech shop lies the tomb – a storied room stocked with costumes that have graced the stage over the years.
This space holds decades of craftsmanship, with each costume sewn by talented seamstresses who donate hours upon hours. Many parents and friends stitch, sew, and add personal histories to their craft pieces. As performers gather for final costume fittings, they pass by an old photograph of the first Nutcracker performance in Homer, Alaska.
For some, seeing this photograph is a poignant reminder of how the production has evolved and grown, with many second-generation participants proudly carrying on the tradition. The costume room becomes a second home filled with gear, fabric, snacks, and laughs.
A New Generation of Dancers
The Homer Alaska Nutcracker has always welcomed participants of all ages. Over time, the production has seen generations of the same families participate. Each year brings familiar faces and introduces new ones, with each cast learning from the seasoned performers who have danced the roles before them. Being part of the Nutcracker is a rite of passage. It's an opportunity to build confidence, express creativity, and create lifelong memories.
The Nutcracker Faire
The Nutcracker Faire on December 7th and 8th brings the holiday spirit to life during the Nutcracker performance season. Held before and after the Nutcracker performance, this two-day event offers an array of local arts, crafts, and foods, making it a perfect place to find unique, handmade gifts and enjoy festive treats.
Vendors from across the region gather to showcase their creations, which range from delicious holiday-inspired baked goods to handmade ornaments and jewelry, knitted wearables, and Alaskan-themed artwork.
It's a wonderful opportunity for residents and visitors to support local businesses while celebrating the holiday season in true Alaskan style. For many, attending the Nutcracker Faire is a cherished holiday tradition that highlights the warmth of the Homer community.
