Homer Alaska Weather - September
September marks the true end of the summer season for Homer.
Falling temperatures paint the trees and fireweed with glowing yellows, reds, and purples. I enjoy breathing a little deeper. After Labor Day, the RV parks, shops, and most restaurants on the Homer Spit close down. Traffic returns to normal (we can now make left-hand turns into traffic! : ), and parking at Safeway becomes much easier.

Temperatures Decline
The average high temperature in Homer drops from 61 degrees in August to 55 degrees in September. Average low drops from 47 degrees to 41 degrees. I put an extra light blanket on the bed - we leave the window open, and sleeping is sweet.
Days Grow Shorter
It is dark when I get up around 6 AM. If the sun is visible, it will peek over the mountains between 7 and 8 AM this month. The length of the day is steadily decreasing by 5 minutes, 18 seconds daily, 37 minutes and 9 seconds monthly. By the end of September, our day is shorter by 2 hours and 34 minutes.
On September 1st, we see our beautiful sunrise at 7:02 AM - by September 30th, it rises at 8:09 AM and sets at 7:40 PM.
We do participate in the craziness of Daylight Savings Time, but the insanity won’t kick in until November 6th in 2022.
Termination Dust
Termination dust is the Alaskan term, coined by Gold Miners, to name the first dusting of snow on the mountains. It let them know to prepare for winter. A very light sprinkling occurred across Kachemak Bay on September 22, 2022. Winter is on the way : )
Low Tide
Low tide is the perfect time for walking on the beach, searching for ocean critters stranded in the pools that form as the tide pulls out. Download a tide app for your phone or check out the US Harbors website for trip planning.
Rain and Clouds
September 2022 had many days of rain and clouds. 5.9 inches of rainfall was recorded - a little more than the September monthly average of 5.1 inches. This month many days started with rain and ended with brilliant sunshine causing rainbows to appear.
